Garmin electronics survive "Lolena Ellen" wreck

Το θεμα αναφερεται στο ναυαγιο του "Lolena Ellen" & αφορα την αντοχη των ναυτικων προιοντων της Garmin οπως αυτα στο συγκεκριμενο σκαφος, Garmin GPSMAP 4010 & 400c Fishfinder. Το "Lolena Ellen" βυθιστηκε στο Millport Bay τον Οκτωβριο του 2010 μετα απο συγκρουση σε βραχια σε εισοδο του λιμανιου σε μικρο βαθος δυο μετρων. Η ανασυρση του σκαφους εγινε μετα απο δυο ημερες & αφου το σκαφος ειχε καλυφθει πληρως απο το νερο. Ο ιδιοκτητης καταφερε να σωσει & τα δυο αυτα μηχανηματα που εκτος απο το νερο δεχτηκαν χτυπηματα απο αλλα αντικειμενα μεσα στο πιλοτηριο.

Charter boat "Lolena Ellen" was wrecked in Millport Bay in October 2010. The boat dragged its mooring and took a pounding on the rocks in a F9 gale and then sank and was fully submerged to depth of 2 metres at high tides, which deployed the life raft.

Two more days and five high tides later, the electronics (Garmin GPSMAP 4010 plotter and 400c Fishfinder) were recovered from the wheel house where they had been getting a severe beating from the move-able objects inside - plus they were 3 metres underwater at high tides. The GMR18HD radar on the wheelhouse roof was also removed (after being submerged to about 2 metres at high tides). The units were then simply wiped down and dry stored and left for 14 days until I got the NMEA 2K cables off the boat at Fairlie Quay where the remains of the boat were (the steelhull is holed in several places and structural frames are twisted 150mm up on port side mid-ship and 100mm up at rudder post, so the boat is a total constructive loss).

I Removed the lid off the GMR18HD radome - bone dry inside - good as new. Soafter a quick spray with contact cleaner around all the power and NMEA sockets of all the Garmin units to remove the seawater, diesel, engine and hydraulic oil mix that everything was covered in, I connected up all the units to a 12V power supply, and it all works... amazing! Left it all powered up for four days with no problems.
